Every three weeks or so, pH solution and nutrient powder need to be added to the water so that conditions are optimal for plant development, and a fish bubbler is set up with the tank to constantly oxygenate the water. Watering, daily check-ins, special plant care, herbicides, and pesticides are not required. More importantly, hydroponics is extremely efficient and environmentally friendly. According to General Hydroponics, a company working to establish hydroponic farms all over the world, this type of farming can reduce agricultural water usage immensely.

On top of that, approximately four hydroponic plants can be placed in the same area that one traditionally-grown plant would require. This efficient usage of space is made possible by the way that hydroponics allows plants to directly access nutrients and water. Consider the roots of the plants shown in the picture below. They have to wind through the soil to find water and nutrients. Thus, plants can grow up to twice as fast as they would in soil!

It has already provided an incredible educational opportunity for students. Almost anything- even a dull biology prep room and a few lettuce plants- has the power to help the environment and the community.
